I understand that the sumerians were very impressive people. They invented writing they also began the study of mathemetics They did not only produce much loved stories like Epic Of Gilgamesh
I understand about Hammurabi 's laws is about 282 in all carved in stone pillars and placed in temples for all to see and follow. The court 's decision were often cruel by modern standards, the penalty for many crimes being death or mutilation. Nebuchadnezzar 2 [but it is written in Roman number] who ruled from 605-562 BC, destroyed the Jewish temple in Jerusalem and took many of the people into captivity. He also defeated the Egyptians. He is most famous, though, for rebuilding Babylon on a huge scale, with magnificent building. Walls ten miles long circled the city and were said to be so wide that four chariots could drive abreast along them. In the centre of the city, a wide street for procession stretched for three-quarter of a mile , ending in a huge gold-covered statue of the gold Marduk.
I understood that the Ancient Mesopotamia was located in a piece of The Fertile Crescent, in what is now southern Iraq. It covered an area about 300 miles long and about 150 miles wide.
The word Mesopotamia actually means (in Greek) “the land between the rivers.” The two rivers referred to by the ancient Greeks are the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers.
In Northern Mesopotamia, the land is fertile. There is seasonal rain. The rivers and streams are fed from the hills and mountains of the region.
In Southern Mesopotamia, the land is mostly flat and barren. Temperatures can rise over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. There is very little rainfall. Storms do blow in from the Persian Gulf, which cools things off. The area does have slight seasons. It can get quite cool at certain times of the year.
Many thousands of years ago, early settlers wandered into the land between two rivers. Natural vegetation and wildlife kept the people well fed. The rivers provided fresh drinking water, and a place to bathe. These early people settled down, invented a system of irrigation, and began to farm the land
The two of Rivers were Tigris and Euphrates and they use to flow across the land which is now Modern Day Iraq and Persian Gulf."The Land of Two rivers" was called Mesopotamia which means,'between two rivers' in Greek language. The people who lived on the banks of these two rivers were called Sumerians. As the soil on the banks of the rivers was rich so the people harvested cereal crops.Sumerians dug canals to save the land from the floods. They also build palaces and temples from clay bricks. The Sumerians survived till 1500 years and after many years other civilizations moved into Mesopotamia around the city of Babylon.
The two rivers of Mesopotamia are the Tiqris and the Euphrates. The Euphrates is the one on the left west in maps and the tiqric is the one closer to Iraq. The Tiqris and Euphrates join up in the south to flow in to the Persion Gulf.
The Land of the two rivers is now called modern iraq it is called the land of the two river beacause the two river euphrates and tiqris join there euphrates is on the west and tigris is closer to iraq
The two rivers are Tigris & Euphrates flowing through Iraq, with rich soil for harvesting. The first cities were built near the banks by the Sumerian people. In order to manage the floods of the two rivers they dug canals & irrigation channels. The people invented writing, used wheels on carts for transport and the potters wheel for pottery. They could also make glass. The Sumerian civilization lasted about 1500 years.
Mesopotamia , a large region centered between two rivers - Tigris and the Euphrates.is referred as the land of two rivers. In Greek language 'Mesopotamia' means 'between two rivers'. The region Corresponds to modern day Iraq, Northwestern Syria and some parts of Turkey Kuwait and Iran] Mesopotamia was discovered by Sargon. Sargon was not from a royal family he was the cup bearer of the king of Kish. He seized the throne of his former master and made his own capital city at Akkad, where he reigned for about fifty years.
Sumerians was the first civilization in this region to build a city. The Sumerians were very impressive their government was organised enough to build great temples and palaces out of clay bricks. To tame the floods of the two great rivers, they dug canals and irrigation channels. They had also invented writing and began the study of mathematics.
The main civilizations of the region were the Sumerians (3000–2000 b.c.e.), the Akkadians (2350–2218 b.c.e.), the Babylonians (1894–1595 b.c.e.), the Assyrians (1380–612 b.c.e.), and the Persians (550–330 b.c.e.). These civilizations did not make the entire empire, they just came and settled in Mesopotamia one after another. In the bronze age the Sumerians ,Babylonians, Akkadian and Assyrians settled in 'The land of two rivers'. In the iron age the Neo-Assyrian and Neo – Babylonians settled in Mesopotamia.
I understand that the land of two rivers was an ancient region in the eastern Mediterranean bounded in the northeast by the Zagros Mountains and in the southeast by the Arabian Plateau, corresponding to today’s Iraq, mostly, but also parts of modern-day Iran, Syria an Turkey. The 'two rivers' of the name referred to the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers and the land was known as 'Al-Jazirah'(the island) by the Arabs (referencing what Egyptologist J.H. Breasted would later call the Fertile Crescent, where Mesopotamian civiliza began).
Dear Teacher, I am writing my understanding of the chapter 'The Land of Two Rivers' here because I couldn't find the relevant post on this topic.
The chapter 'The Land of Two Rivers' is about Babylon which is now called Iraq. This is one of the most ancient city/country of the world and is also famous for being the land of most prophets. The two rivers that ran through Babylon were Tigris and Euphrates. Hummurabi was among the famous kings who ruled this land. Babylon has a long history of it's destruction by invaders, such as, Assyrians, Sennacherib, Nebuchandnezzar and Cyrus. Babylonians never gave up and rebuilt their city each time it was destroyed. They had to struggle hard for freedom from brutal rulers. When the Greek travelers came here after 500 years, they found the city all perished.
I understood that the Sumerians were very impressive people. They invented writing they also began the study of mathematics, but later Egyptians writing slightly than Sumerians. The land of two rivers is now known as modern Iraq.
