Interesting Question for you!

Today in the class, Aashir asked that if oxygen is not present beyond the atmosphere and fire needs oxygen to burn, then how come the sun is made of fire as there is no oxygen present there. Very Interesting! Now, search on the net and share your answers here!

Happy googling! :-)

  1. The sun doesn't 'burn', and it doesn't need any oxygen to do what it's doing, or to
generate the energy that it's producing.

I once read about a calculation that somebody did, where they figured out how long the
sun would last if it was completely made out of coal, and the coal burned fast enough to
produce the amount of energy that the sun actually produces.Stars do not burn like a fire, they produce their heat by a process called nuclear fusion where hydrogen is converted into helium (like in a hydrogen bomb).

    1. The sun is not a ball of fire.It is a very huge star and does not need oxygen to burn.

    2. Excellent Zainab! You are right. The sun produces heat and light through a process called nuclear fusion. In this process atoms of hydrogen are joined together to obtain helium and release energy. Oxygen is not required in this process. Remember! This is a nuclear reaction and where oxygen is required for something to burn like a log in a fireplace is called a chemical reaction.

  2. On September 17th, 1998 the Ithaca Journal ran its first "Ask A Scientist!" article in which Professor Neil Ashcroft , who was then the director of CCMR, answered the question "What is Jupiter made of?" Since then, we have received over 1,000 questions from students and adults from all over the world. Select questions are answered weekly and published in the Ithaca Journal and on our web site. "Ask A Scientist!" reaches more than 21,000 Central New York residents through the Ithaca Journal and countless others around the world throught the "Ask a Scientist!" web site.
Across disciplines and across the state, from Nobel Prize winning scientist David Lee to notable science education advocate Bill Nye, researchers and scientists have been called on to respond to these questions. For more than seven years, kids - and a few adults - have been submitting their queries to find out the answer to life's everyday questions.

  4. About three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen, while the rest is mostly helium. Sun burns by the process of Nuclear Fusion. In Nuclear Fusion, the hydrogen gas in the core of the Sun gets squeezed together so tightly that four hydrogen nuclei combine to form one helium atom. In the process some of the mass of hydrogen atoms is converted into energy in the form of light. So, oxygen does not take part in this process.

  7. The way the Sun "burns" fuel is completely different from the way a fire on Earth burns (the term "burning" is a bit misleading when used to talk about stars). The Sun gets its energy by smashing small light elements together to make heavier elements; most of a star's life is spent smashing hydrogen atoms together to make helium. The burning that a star does, then, is a nuclear reaction, and not a chemical one like the fires on Earth.

  9. Sun is composed of many gases including 70% hydrogen, about 28% helium and 1.5 % of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and neon.
Sun does not burn but actually shines because of the hot glowing gases at its core and in its gaseous atmosphere. The hydrogen on sun is extremely heated up to helium and releases extraordinary amount of heat and light. This process is not called burning but nuclear fusion. The oxygen is not required for nuclear fusion.

  10. It's not burning chemically, like a fire in your fireplace, it's using nuclear fusion.

  22. Q.2.
Ans.When I put the beaker near the windowsill. After one day little water evaporated. After two days half of the water evaporated. After three days some of the water evaporated and after four days the whole water evaporated.
The Sun's heat evaporated all the water in the glass.
    Q.3.
Ans.When you put the rug or blanket on the fire, the rug presses the fire and so it dicreases the oxygen and the fire easily turns off.
    Q.4.
Ans. When a crowd of people are in a closed room the oxygen dicreases and people feel hot and drowsy. People should open the doors and windows to let fresh air come inside so the amount of air increases.
